  Historical Background on USS Constitution
USS ConstitutionUSS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. Carrying a crew of 450 men and over 50 guns, she was launched in 1797 to protect America's freedom on the seas. She was undefeated against the British in the War of 1812 and earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" when a sailor saw a cannon ball bounce off her thick, wooden hull during battle. When she was declared unseaworthy in 1828, she was saved by the American people who rallied for her preservation. After a long career, including capturing a slave ship, circumventing the globe, and serving as a military prison, she is now berthed in Boston and is open to the public. Objectives
After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
  1. Identify several different units of measurement.
  2. Convert measurements from the US Customary System and the Metric System.
  3. Identify several facts about USS Constitution.

Massachusetts Math Curriculum Frameworks
7.M.2 Given the formulas, convert from one system of measurement to another. Use technology as appropriate.

Materials
Worksheet (pdf): Converting Between Systems of Measurement: USS Constitution Measurements
Classroom charts that will help with converting between the US Customary System and Metric System (go to regentsprep.org/Regents/math/meteng/MetEng.htm)
  Calculator (optional)

Procedure
Introduce the lesson by briefly describing USS Constitution and the fact that she played an important part in American history.

Review the Metric System. Review the different types of measurements (i.e., length, weight, volume, etc.) and how they are expressed in both the US Customary System and the Metric System.

Give each student a copy of the "USS Constitution Measurements" worksheet that contains many measurements from the Ship. Give them the rest of the class to work on converting the measurements from the US customary system to the Metric System. Students can work together.

Evaluation and Analysis
When grading a student's work, consider the following:
Does the student possess the necessary knowledge and skills to convert various measurements from the US customary system to the Metric System?
