What a Glorious/Tragic Day!
Working with rhyme and meter

Ask students to read the broadside on the previous page, or ask a volunteer to read it aloud to the class. Then ask students to write a modern broadside about something newsworthy that happened in your town or school. For example, it could be about a competition that ended in a surprising victory or loss, or about the opening of a new school building, youth center or recreational facility. It could also be about an historic event that happened in your area. Have them research the event, create a list of pertinent facts and work the details into a rhyme scheme.

Extra Credit: Musically inclined students might put their broadsides, or the one in the text, to music.

Have on Hand- photocopies of the broadside used in “Hear Ye! Hear Ye!”
